With a population of just over one million, Adelaide is a compact 'Garden City' full of historic architecture and parks. The city forefathers laid out the CBD in a one-mile square grid – perfect for walking tours- and the beaches and Adelaide Hills districts are a short 30 minute drive or train ride away. Adelaide has a temperate climate similar to the Mediterranean region, with wet winters and dry, hot summers. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.

A stroll along North Terrace will take you past the 19th century sandstone buildings of the University of Adelaide, the South Australian Museum and the South Australian Art Gallery, along with the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery, a stunning display of historic and contemporary Aboriginal art and culture. Nearby is the bustling alfresco ambience of East Rundle Street, where you will be sure to find a great coffee and a gourmet meal of delicious local produce. Many Italian and Greek immigrants made Adelaide home after WWII and their presence has led to Adelaide becoming something of a gourmet haven.

Towards the centre of town you'll find Adelaide Central Market, an old-fashioned covered market-way with every kind of delectable gourmet produce imaginable. Adelaide also has many authentic Chinese restaurants, a legacy of the Chinese immigrants to the 19th century gold-fields. East of the city you will find the quaint seaside suburbs of Glenelg, Henley Beach and Semaphore, which have trendy cafe strips and calm ocean beaches. There is a train network linking the suburbs with the city and many visitors take the historic 'Glenelg tram' trip from the CBD to the beach-side suburb.

Adelaide has two major festivals – The Adelaide Festival in March (featuring world-class theatre and dance), and the WOMAD Festival of world music, also in March.
